Why your QR code won't scan (and quick fixes)
Almost every “it won’t scan” comes down to a handful of fixable causes. Run through this list and you’ll catch the culprit.
Low contrast
Fix: make the code dark on a light background. Light-on-dark and low-contrast brand tints are the number-one cause of failed scans. Cameras need a clear difference between the squares and the gaps.
Too small
Fix: enlarge it. Below roughly 0.8 in (2 cm) on a printed card, phones struggle. Bigger codes scan faster and from further away.
No quiet zone
Fix: add clear space. The code needs an empty margin (about four modules) on all sides. If text, a logo or the card edge touches it, the phone can’t find the code’s boundary.
Stretched or distorted
Fix: keep it perfectly square. Scaling a QR non-proportionally warps the modules and breaks the pattern. Lock the aspect ratio when you resize.
Busy or textured background
Fix: put it on a solid, light patch. A photo, gradient or pattern behind the code confuses the camera. Give it a plain rectangle to live on.
Print problems
Fix: export at 300 DPI and use solid ink. Low resolution softens the squares; gloss glare and smudged toner do the rest. Print a test card and scan it before ordering a batch.
Damaged or dirty
Fix: reprint. A creased, scuffed or marked code loses data. QR error correction tolerates a little, but not a torn corner.
One test catches all of these: preview at actual print size and scan it with your own phone before you order. If it reads instantly for you, it will for others.
FAQ
Why won't my QR code scan?
Most often: poor contrast, the code is too small, or it has no clear quiet zone around it. Make it dark-on-light, at least 2 cm, with empty space on all sides.
Does damage stop a QR code working?
It can. QR codes self-correct for minor wear, but a torn or heavily scuffed corner removes too much data to read. Reprint damaged cards.
How do I test a QR code before printing?
Preview it at actual print size and scan it with your phone from a natural distance. If it reads instantly, the printed version will too.
